As we celebrate NAIDOC Week, the Public Sector Commissioner has introduced measures to increase awareness and enhance our ability to work in culturally informed ways.

Cultural awareness training is now mandatory for everyone who works in the public sector for 3 or more months as well as each board member. This requirement is described in the new Commissioner鈥檚 Instruction.

Training can be through an agency-provided program or using the new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness training we have released today.

Our training is an engaging and interesting way to learn about the world鈥檚 oldest continuous culture. It has been endorsed by the Aboriginal Advisory Council of Western Australia.

It includes historical and contemporary information over 4 main sections: family, education, country and work. At the end of each section are questions to assess your understanding.

The more of us who have this knowledge and understanding, the better placed our sector will be to work respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues and deliver vital services to our diverse community.

Both the new resource and Commissioner鈥檚 Instruction support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people action plan, one of 6 plans under the Workforce Diversification and Inclusion Strategy.
