WA Police Force will apply double demerit points to all speeding, drink and drug driving, mobile phone, seat belt and red light offences.

People caught driving a vehicle fitted with a speed camera laser jammer or driving in a way to evade detection by a speed camera will immediately lose their licence, with 14 demerit points applying to those offences over long weekends.

The new mobile phone demerit point penalties brought into play on September 1 will also be subject to double demerits.

Touching or holding a mobile phone while not in a cradle to make, receive or end a voice call will attract six demerit points, and creating, sending or looking at a text, email, social media, photo or similar attracts eight demerit points.

Infringements that accompany the above offences are not doubled during double demerit points periods.

鈥淲ith more people on our roads during the long weekend and into the school holidays, double demerit points act as a deterrent for those drivers who continue to take risks on our roads,鈥 said Road Safety Commissioner, Adrian Warner.

鈥淭his is also the first time the new mobile phone penalties will apply and if you are caught using your mobile phone whilst driving you will be subject to hefty double demerit points.

鈥淚 encourage all road users this long weekend to stay safe and drive with courtesy and care.鈥
