The Strategy is a significant initiative to manage the area’s growing population, economic development potential and tourism opportunities while protecting its valuable cultural and environmental heritage.
Dampier Peninsula Planning Strategy main outcomes
- The DPPS provides a comprehensive coordinated planning framework for the Dampier Peninsula.
- The DPPS provides informed guidance to the Shire of Broome’s Local Planning Strategy and new Local Planning Scheme No. 6 and the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley’s Local Planning Strategy.
- The DPPS also provides guidance for future land use planning outcomes in the negotiations of Native Title and Indigenous Land Use Agreements.
- The DPPS establishes two new land use categorises – ‘Cultural and Natural Resource Use’ and ‘Pastoral’ – which better reflect the ongoing land uses pertaining to the North West rather than a blanket ‘Rural’ use being applied as has previously been done.
- The DPPS establishes a settlement and tourism hierarchy which is supported by the State Planning Strategy and draft Kimberley Regional Planning and Infrastructure Strategy.
- The Strategy promotes compact settlements by consolidating growth in areas where key services and infrastructure are already established, both for residents of the Dampier Peninsula and visitors alike.
