Education maintenance stimulus package

The Western Australian ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ has announced a $200 million maintenance program across all 789 public schools.
Last updated:

About the program

The program will stimulate the economy, create up to 3,150 jobs in metropolitan and regional areas, and deliver high priority maintenance works across all public schools in Western Australia.

Phase 1

Schools will share in $35 million funding for maintenance or minor works (to be arranged by 28 February 2020) and are being encouraged to engage local contractors and manage works directly. The Department of Finance will help plan and deliver projects in collaboration with the Department of Education.

Phase 2

$165 million of funding will be available for other targeted maintenance works, upgrades or refurbishments.

This phase will be delivered progressively (by 30 June 2021) and will target high priority maintenance identified in building condition assessment reports, such as roof replacements, installation of roof safety systems, removal of redundant evaporative cooling systems, electrical upgrades, structural remediation and surface repairs to playing courts and car parks.

Additionally, the upgrade and refurbishment works will meet ongoing Department of Education operational requirements. These include administration upgrades, design and technology compliance upgrades, sustainability improvements, installation of shade structures, and a transportable and demountable building works program.

Metropolitan schools

Maintenance works projects for metropolitan schools will be delivered through either:

  • the ‘direct to market’ and ‘simple works’ processes, where schools engage contractors and manage low value works directly
  • the Department of Finance's existing contractual frameworks, including its Maintenance Services Arrangement with Programmed Facility Management

Regional schools

Maintenance works projects for regional schools will be delivered by the Department of Finance through a range of state-wide contracts with local contractors.
