Meet Greenough Regional Prison鈥檚 Margaret, who prepares prisoners for post-release employment.

Vocational Support Officer Margaret

As a Laundry Officer, Margaret is part of a team of VSOs who oversee the smooth running of Greenough鈥檚 big commercial laundry, employing as many as 40 prisoners 鈥 some of whom complete the TAFE Laundry Certificate II.

For colour consultant Margaret, it鈥檚 a far cry from running her own painting and decorating business in Perth.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a win-win situation,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he Department has a willing and dedicated staff member and I have a good solid job which I love. My partner and I moved to Geraldton to work here and we enjoy the town, we love having the beaches almost to ourselves, and we like the work.鈥

The Greenough laundry not only does all the prison鈥檚 washing 鈥 such as prisoner clothing, bedding, towels and kitchen uniforms 鈥 it also supplies and washes blankets and towels for the Police lock-up, and services major clients such as the Geraldton Regional Hospital and various mines.

鈥淏eing a VSO provides great opportunities,鈥 Margaret said.

鈥淲orking alongside other VSOs, Prison Officers and prisoners is really interesting as you encounter a vast range of different personalities, abilities and skill sets to create an ever-changing team of workers to achieve our work-load commitments.

鈥淚t鈥檚 great to encourage and see the prisoners take pride in their work. Many get a sense of achievement and satisfaction at the end of a busy day. I hope that by assisting in creating and maintaining a positive and stable work environment for them, it will help them when seeking gainful employment when they are released.

鈥淲e also have a great Education team with whom we work closely to try and achieve that goal.

鈥淚t was definitely worth the life change.鈥
