Our teachers and trainers help prisoners and juvenile detainees develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to take responsible control of their lives.

The challenge for you - as teacher or trainer - is to create a welcoming and encouraging educational environment to reconnect with disengaged learners, many of whom have had negative experiences with formal education, training and employment.

The role

You'll provide tuition to individuals or small groups and cater for a wide range of abilities and levels.

The Department of Justice offers nationally accredited education and vocational training courses and operates as a Registered Training Organisation through the Education and Vocational Training Unit.

Our teachers and trainers work as:

  • casual tutors (adult basic education and vocational education and training)
  • Aboriginal education workers
  • prisoner education coordinators and assessors
  • campus managers
  • curriculum area coordinators.

Your challenge will be to work successfully under both education and corrective services models.

Eligibility

When positions are advertised, the eligibility requirements will be outlined in the individual job advertisement.

You'll need specific qualifications for specific roles:

  • Campus managers and prisoner education assessors must hold a minimum 4-year teaching qualification (or equivalent recognised in Australia) with at least 5 years' teaching experience, preferably in adult education.
  • Prisoner education coordinators must hold a minimum 3-year teaching qualification (or equivalent recognised in Australia) with at least 5 years' teaching experience, preferably in adult education.
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

Aboriginal education workers must be of Australian Aboriginal background.

Selection process

To be considered for appointment, you'll need to successfully complete all of the following assessments:

  • identification check
  • selection panel interview
  • criminal history screening (this is undertaken by the Department - applicants are not required to obtain a police clearance)
  • integrity check
  • any other assessments or checks as noted in the job advertisement.
