Legal Practice Board of WA
Show moreLegal Practice Board of Western Australia
The Legal Practice Board is an independent statutory authority within the Western Australian public sector. It enables Western Australian legal practitioners’ professional practice through issuing their annual practising certificates, and assists the Supreme Court in admission to practice. It advances the administration of justice and protection for the community by ensuring legal practitioner and practice compliance and resolving disputes and complaints.
The Board also supports the legal profession and the community by providing educational and professional development services, and promoting clear and comprehensive information. In Western Australia the Board is the primary designated regulatory authority under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (WA). Many of the Board’s functions are delegated to its committees and officers.
Members
The Board consists of
- the Attorney General
- the Solicitor General or, if there is no Solicitor General, the State Solicitor

- each King’s Counsel and Senior Council (whose principal place of practice is in this State, who is not a full-time judicial officer, and who has nominated themselves as a member)

Mental Health Tribunal
Show moreThe Mental Health Tribunal (Tribunal) is an independent decision-making body established by the Mental Health Act 2014 (WA) (the Act) to safeguard the rights of involuntary mental health patients in Western Australia.
In Western Australia, the Act permits psychiatrists to treat some mental health patients without their consent. The Act refers to these consumers as ‘involuntary patients’ (although we prefer the language ‘involuntary consumers’ and will use that term instead). A psychiatrist makes a consumer ‘involuntary’ by making an ‘involuntary treatment order’. Without adequate safeguards, the power to make involuntary treatment orders could be abused. Parliament created the Tribunal to protect consumers from potential abuse of the powers under the Act.

The Hon Dr Andrew Lu AM
Registrar and Executive Officer
Jeanene Rodrigues-Smith
Members
The Tribunal has a President and Tribunal members who make decisions under the Act. When the Tribunal holds hearings, it usually sits in panels of three. One member of the panel is a lawyer, one is a psychiatrist, and the third is a community member. Tribunal members are independent statutory officers appointed by the Governor on the recommendation of the Minister. Details on the Tribunal Members can be found on the .
