The Mental Health Act 2014 recognises the importance of people who provide personal support to people with a mental illness and provides these people with rights. They are called a 'personal support person'.

The Act recognises this role as well as the rights and views of the person they are supporting. 

A 'personal support person' for someone with mental illness, can be a:

  • unpaid carer
  • close family member
  • nominated person
  • parent
  • guardian
