Statistics overview

Between 2019 and 2023, there were 113,368 reported crashes on roads in the metropolitan region. Of these, 4% resulted in at least one person being killed or seriously injured. 

Between 2019 and 2023, there were 5432 people killed or seriously injured (KSI) in reported crashes, including 295 fatalities and 5137 people seriously injured. This equates to 52.0 people KSI per 100,000 population.

Demographic data

Of those 5432 people KSI between 2019 and 2023:

  • 63% were occupants of motor vehicles
  • 20% were motorcyclists
  • 11% were pedestrians
  • 7% were cyclists.

More than half (58%) of people KSI were male, 41% were female and 1% had no sex recorded.

The three most common age groups of people KSI were:

  • 20-29 years old (20%)
  • 30-39 years old (17%)
  • 40-49 years old (14%).

Common crash circumstances

People KSI were most often injured in:

  • Right angle crashes (24%)
  • Rear end crashes (18%)
  • Right turn thru crashes (14%)
  • Hit object crashes (14%).

People KSI were most often in crashes on:

  • 60 km/h sections of road (31%)
  • 50 km/h sections of road (21%)
  • 70 km/h sections of road (20%)
  • 80 km/h sections of road (9%).

Approximately half (51%) of people KSI were involved in crashes at intersections.

The majority (60%) were involved in crashes on local roads, while 36% were involved in crashes on state roads. The remaining 4% were involved in crashes on other types of roads, road-related areas or where no location was recorded.

Contributing factors

Contributing behavioural factors (cannot be summed):

  • 12% of people KSI were in crashes where speed was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 4% were in crashes where inattention was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 6% were in crashes where fatigue was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 3% of motor vehicle occupants KSI were not wearing a seatbelt
  • 3% of motorcyclists KSI were not wearing a helmet
  • 7% of cyclists KSI were not wearing a helmet.
