A review of the Contaminated Sites Act 2003 was completed in 2015.
Last updated:

The Contaminated Sites Act 2003 complements the Environmental Protection Act 1986 and addresses contamination and legacy issues not regulated under the Environmental Protection Act 1986.

A review was carried out in accordance with s 99 of the Contaminated Sites Act 2003 which requires the Minister to review the Act as soon as practicable after five years since commencement.

The Environment Minister tabled a report on the review in Parliament on 24 February 2015.

As part of our response to the review, we have revised and updated the contaminated sites guidelines and fact sheets.

Improvements were also made to processes, and the guidelines incorporate updates in response to the variation of the National Environment Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999 (NEPM).
