Roadside Litter Prevention Project

Our campaign to reduce litter on our roadsides by encouraging people to dispose of it properly in the bin.
Last updated:

Did you know that roadsides are one of the most littered sites in Western Australia?

Studies show that about 40% of all items of litter in Western Australia are found on roadsides and this makes up 70% of the total volume of litter. These studies also show that nearly 70% of this rubbish is made up of food and beverage items like food wrappers and drink bottles that have been thrown out of the windows of vehicles. Pretty sad hey.

So, what can we do about it?

It seems pretty easy; just don鈥檛 throw your rubbish out the window as you zoom along!

Keep Australia Beautiful Council and Main Roads WA are here to help by providing free resources and info to make it easy to reduce litter on our roadsides.

There are free, compostable car litter bags available from service stations and roadhouses in regional WA and you will see some signage appearing on roadsides with Western Australian wildlife asking you to KEEP WA litter free.

Pick up a Keep Bag

Thanks to the great response from the WA Public, KABC has exhausted its supply of KEEPcar litter bags. While there will still be some available from service stations and visitor centres for a short while, KEEP bags are no longer available for distribution. KABC is busy working on the next initiative to encourage responsible rubbish disposal behaviour to keep our roadsides clean. Thanks for your support WA!

Keep WA litter-free signage

As you are travelling along you will see some new signage like the ones below popping up along major regional WA roads. The signage is designed to show the impact of litter on WA wildlife and encourage travellers to keep hold of their rubbish until they get the opportunity to dispose of it properly in a bin.
