State referendums

How referendums are conducted and details of past referendums.
Last updated:

Referendums are held to gauge the opinion of the electors on a proposed change to the State or Commonwealth Constitution.

The Commission is responsible for administering State referendums in Western Australia.

For electors, a referendum is very similar to an election.

All registered electors are required to vote and a full range of early voting options are provided.

The main difference is that instead of a ballot paper listing the names of nominated candidates for a district or region, electors are asked to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to one or more questions.

Results for past referendums are available from the 1900 referendum on Federation to more recent referendums on daylight saving and retail trading hours.
