Building a diverse workforce
Actively promoting and pursuing inclusiveness, equity and diversity in the workforce ensures that the department has diverse perspectives, skills and experiences at the strategic and operational levels that are reflective of the Western Australian community. Aboriginal Employment Strategy
To actively contribute to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, DEMIRS is committed to increasing the representation of Aboriginal people within the department. The Aboriginal Employment Strategy is an integral part in designing Aboriginal employment initiatives and provides a cohesive set of actions to attract, appoint, and progress Aboriginal people within the department.
The strategy focuses on four key action areas:
- Expand the range of Aboriginal employment opportunities.
- Invest in the capability of Aboriginal employees.
- Increase the workforce representation of Aboriginal employees at all levels in the department with a specific focus on positions on Level 5 and above.
- Improve and maintain a culturally inclusive workplace.
Aborigi鈥媙al Employment Program
Overview
The Aboriginal Employment Program (AEP) is an integral Aboriginal employment initiative in the attraction, appointment and continued professional development of Aboriginal people.
Each year the department offers a number of employment opportunities at various levels through the AEP. Positions are advertised under Section 51 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) as a measure to achieve equality and increase workforce representation of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Therefore, only applicants who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander will be considered for these positions.
About the program
The AEP is a 12-month program providing the opportunity for permanent employment upon successful completion of the program.
The AEP commences each year in February.

Solid Futures Aboriginal traineeship program
The Solid Futures Aboriginal Traineeship Program supports public sector agencies build diverse, talented and more inclusive workforces.
Solid Futures provides an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to undertake formal training and paid employment whilst completing a Certificate III in 黑料正能量. The program runs in both metropolitan and regional areas each year and is supported by First Nations mentors throughout the traineeship.
