The CleanRun roadside emissions monitoring program was designed to assess the health of Perth’s vehicle fleet.
Monitoring was completed using an Accuscan 4600 remote sensing device (RSD).
The RSD measured emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, hydrocarbons and smoke as vehicle pass by. A smart sign provided simple and immediate feedback to drivers, advising them of their vehicle’s performance.
The RSD was used to:
- determine vehicle fleet trends over time
- determine average fleet emissions
- detect high emitting vehicles
- raise awareness of vehicle emissions among drivers.
The RSD was also designed to help drivers make the link between efficient vehicle performance and savings on fuel.

Show moreThe 2017 RSD monitoring program covered locations across Perth and Mandurah across November and December. We carried out monitoring of up to 18,000 vehicles at six sites, for two days per site.
The 2017 monitoring locations and dates included those listed below.

- Weaponess Road, Wembley Downs. 21-22 November 7am-2pm

Show moreHow did the RSD work and what did it measure?
The RSD measured exhaust emissions as a vehicle drives through a light beam. The light beam is absorbed by the pollutants in the exhaust.
The amount of light absorbed is measured by a sensor and this is used to determine the amount and type of pollutants produced by the vehicle.
Emissions information collected included total hydrocarbons (THC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO) and particulates (as Ultra Violet smoke).
What factors influence my vehicles emissions?
- Road and traffic conditions
- Fuel type and quality
- Engine design or modifications
- Maintenance regimes
- Driving techniques
What was the CleanRun smart sign?
The CleanRun smart sign provided immediate feedback to the driver about the emissions performance of the vehicle as they drive past. The display read:
- Your emissions are GOOD = saving money
- Your emissions are FAIR = costing money
- Your emissions are POOR = losing money
What happened if my vehicle generated a 'poor' emissions reading?
The RSD was deployed for public education/awareness, not compliance purposes. You will not be fined.
The vehicle may need servicing or maintenance. This could improve vehicle performance and reduce emissions.
Your vehicle may be running inefficiently and using more fuel than necessary. This will be costing you more money in fuel.
Can I access the detailed results for my vehicle?
Individual results are not available. The results for your vehicle are kept strictly confidential, and were combined with data from other vehicles similar to your own to produce class averages. In no way was your vehicle identified in the study reports.
